Calstock Arts Women in Jazz Season, Autumn 2016

Calstock Jazz festival is having a year off in 2016, but we hope to come back refreshed in 2017.

In the meantime, Calstock Arts continues to offer a great selection of Jazz (and other genres of music) and entertainment at The Old Chapel.

Calstock Arts launches a new Women in Jazz season in Autumn 2016.

Friday 30 September:  Ivo Neame Quintet, featuring saxophonist Tori Freestone

Ivo Neame Strata Promo

Well-known as the pianist with Phronesis and with Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset, Ivo Neame’s most recent release sees him reach new heights as a composer, leading his quintet in a set of exuberant and creative originals.

His quintet features a stellar line-up of the cream of UK jazz: a return visit to Calstock Arts for Jim Hart (vibraphone) and Dave Hamblett (drums), plus a first time visit for Tori Freestone (saxes/flutes) and Huw Williams (double bass).

“This superb new quintet … signals the emergence of a UK-based jazz artist of international quality.” Jazzwise.

Nerija landscape
Nominated for Jazz FM Breakthrough Act of the Year 2016, Nérija (pronounced Ne-ree-ya) is a collective of up-and-coming, London-based musicians, formed from an initiative seeking to encourage young women to play jazz.

With influences from jazz, hip hop and afro beat, Nerija is blazing a trail for women in jazz. A highlight of the 2015 Manchester Jazz Festival, their set was broadcast live on BBC Radio Jazz on 3. Their unusual line-up of four horns and guitar gives them their distinctive, fresh and current sound. They have toured alongside top UK jazz musicians including Nathaniel Facey of Empirical and Zoe Rahman, with their debut CD due for release in Summer 2016.

Sheila Maurice-Grey (trumpet), Rosie Turton (trombone), Cassie Kinoshi (alto saxophone), Nubya Garcia (tenor saxophone), Shirley Tetteh (guitar), Inga Eichler (double bass), Lizy Exel (drums).

Nérija brought together elements of South African, West African, Caribbean and contemporary British jazz sounds. It was great to see – and hear – these young up-and-coming musicians performing with such soul and a sense of adventure.”
